22 year old Kyle Marston, a student and teacher with the Veronica Law School of Highland Dancing, has won the Australian Champion of Champions Highland Dancing Championship held at Caloundra this past Easter weekend.
Kyle was announced the winner ahead of some very worthy competition from all states of Australia and overseas.
This result becomes the pinnacle of a career that has been truly amazing. Kyle began dancing with the VLSHD in 1999 and worked his way through the level system before dancing his first championship at the age of 14.
Kyle first qualified for the Champion of Champions Championship by placing 1st runner-up in the Scottish Boys Championship held at the British Open Festival in the UK in 2002. He continued placing successfully throughout Australia in the 13, 14 and 15 years category.
In December 2003 he danced his first 16 years and over Championship in Daylesford, Victoria placing 7th. Dancing in this category, he was for the first time competing with one of his tutors Douglas McFarland. Together the men travelled to all corners of the World as well as featuring in Douglas McFarland's Down Under the Kilt. This was a major turning point for Kyle who continued to place consistently in each championship he danced before heading to Dundee, Scotland for a period of six months in 2006.
On return from Scotland, Kyle won his first Championship at Canberra. This was to become the first of many. In 2007 he won the ACT Championship and Garrick-Stewart (SA) Championship. He also featured in Douglas McFarland's Down Under the Kilt; Dreamtime Stories with a sensational dance combining his dancing technique and his elite football skills.
In March 2008, at the Champion of Champions event held in Newcastle, NSW, Kyle was awarded with the Australia medal for being the highest placed Australian behind World Champion David Wilton and Canadian Champion dancer Katie Trydal. He then went on to win The Internationals, The Australian Commonwealth, Eastern Australian, NSW/ ACT, Thistle City of Brisbane Championships and three Central Coast Titles. Kyle also featured in Douglas McFarland's Down Under the Kilt; Reel Men Do Dance.
In 2008 and 2009 he was the winner of the Grand Australasian Championship and qualified for the World Highland Dancing Championship finals.
He started out the 11 year old brother, kicking footballs at dancing comps and has become Australia's Champion of Champions. Kyle is an inspiration to all know him and is looking forward to imparting his knowledge of dance as a teacher for the Veronica Law School of Highland Dancing and in particular with Douglas McFarland's Highland Warriors.
